What you need
- Your Hijri birth date. Convert it first with the Hijri–Gregorian Converter if you only know the Gregorian date.
- Today’s Hijri date, shown at the top of every tool on this site.
- The length of the Hijri month before today’s date (29 or 30 days), in case you need to borrow. You can find it in the Hijri Calendar.
The steps
Write both dates as day / month / year and subtract:
- Days: subtract the birth day from today’s day. If today’s day is smaller, add the length of the previous Hijri month and take one month away.
- Months: subtract the birth month. If the result would be negative, add 12 and take one year away.
- Years: subtract the birth year.
Example 1
Born 12 Rabi al-Awwal 1415 AH, age on 1 Ramadan 1447 AH:
- Days: 1 < 12, so borrow Shaban 1447 (29 days): 1 + 29 − 12 = 18 days; Ramadan (9) becomes 8.
- Months: 8 − 3 = 5 months.
- Years: 1447 − 1415 = 32 years.
Result: 32 years, 5 months and 18 days, exactly what the Hijri Age Calculator shows. The Gregorian age on the same day (18 February 2026) is 31 years, 5 months and 29 days.
Example 2: borrowing twice
Born 20 Shawwal 1418 AH, age on 5 Rajab 1447 AH:
- Days: 5 < 20, borrow Jumada al-Akhirah 1447 (29 days): 5 + 29 − 20 = 14 days; Rajab (7) becomes 6.
- Months: 6 < 10, borrow a year: 6 + 12 − 10 = 8 months; the year becomes 1446.
- Years: 1446 − 1418 = 28 years.
Result: 28 years, 8 months and 14 days.
Common mistakes
- Assuming every Hijri month has 30 days: they have 29 or 30.
- Subtracting years only: this ignores whether the birthday has already passed this year.
- Multiplying the Gregorian age by 1.03: a rough estimate, not an exact age.
